great stories for young and old
Since he wrote these stories during the several years he spent in Brattleboro, VT, we of the North Country have a particular affinity for Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Books. The most familiar are the Mowgli tales, basis for the very good Disney movie. Mowgli is an Indian infant who is lost in the jungle after Shere Khan (the tiger) kills his family. Bagheera (the black panther) places him with a wolf family that has a newborn litter. Mowgli's new "parents" and Bagheera and Baloo (the brown bear) sponsor him for membership in the Wolf Pack and, much to Shere Khan's chagrin, he is admitted. Mowgli is raised according to Jungle Law, but all the while Shere Khan is plotting his revenge and ingratiating himself with the younger wolves. Eventually, he leads a rebellion against Akela, the pack's aging leader and attacks Mowgli, who beats him away with a burning firebrand. In these and the several other Mowgli stories--there are some prequels--Kipling strikes a nice balance between anthropomorphizing the animals and understanding Mowgli's natural superiority.

Also appearing in this collection is a story I've loved since I first saw the Classic Cartoon version--Rikki Tikki Tavi. It tells the story of an intrepid young mongoose and his life or death battle to protect an Indian villa from a couple of particularly unpleasant cobras. Rikki Tikki Tavi has always seemed to me to be one of the great heroes in all of literature.

These are great stories for young and old. For folks who worry about Kipling's potentially imperialist, racist or racialist overtones (see review), rest assured, these tales are free of such themes. They offer an excellent opportunity to introduce kids to the work of a true master storyteller.

GRADE: A

A book of wonder
This was probably one of my most favorite books as a young child if not my favorite. The way Kipling shows the struggle of this young boy in the jungle is amazing. He fails to leave out any detail and throughout the whole story your totally caught up in it without one point of boredom. I recommend this to any parent looking for a good book to read to their children or to have their kids read. Kipling is a great author and after doing a report on him and reading some of his other works I recommend those as well, especially A White Man's Burden. If your looking for books by a author who mixes fiction with truth, action and adventure with tales that bring in more serious aspects Kipling is the author for you.

Learn the Jungle Law, it's still in effect
The story of Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the jungles of 19th century India, charmed me when I was young no less than it does today. Kipling wrote this to celebrate his love of India and it's wild animals as well as to show again some of his frequent themes of honor, loyalty, and perserverance. While his writing may seem 'dated' to some, to others the truths he includes rise above politics and 'current correctness'. Baloo the Bear, Shere Khan the Tiger, Bagheera the Panther, Kaa the Python were all childhood friends of mine, and reading these Jungle Book stories to your own children today will result in their exposure to such old fashioned concepts as sticking by your friends in adversity, helping your family, relying on yourself. Good lessons then, good lessons now. Mowgli learns the value of 'good manners' early on, learns that 'all play and no work' leads to unexpected troubles, learns that thoughtless actions can have devasting consequences. By showing Mowgli in an often dangerous 'all animal' world, we see reflections of modern human problems presented in a more subtle light. Kipling leads children down the jungle path into adventures beyond their day to day imagining and along the way, he weaves subtle points in and out of the stories, he shows the value of 'doing for yourself', of 'learning who to trust'. All of this in a tale of childhood adventure that's never been equaled. The book is over 100 years old now, and there are terms & concepts from the age of Empire that aren't 'correct' today. Parents can edit as needed as they read bedtime stories, but I've found that children learn early on that the world changes, and that some ideas that were popular long ago did not prove to be correct. Explaining this, too, is a part of parenting. Some of our current popular ideas may not stand the test of time, but I suspect that 100 years from now parents will still read the Jungle Book to their children. And the children will still be charmed, thrilled and instructed in valuable life-lessons.

Dare to Succeed: How to Survive and Thrive in the Game of Life
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion (September, 2001)
Author: Mark Burnett
Average review score:

This Book is a great edition for Survivor Fans
This books is a great book. I don't like the fact that on EVERY page of the book it either says Eco-challenge or Survivor. This is also a biography of him as much as it is a self-help book. Very interesting reading. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Adrenaline rush
Mr. Burnett is a true adventurer and someone to be admired. I am inspired not only by his ability to reinvent TV programming, but also by his drive to create and build the best expedition race in the world. This book is a great read for everyone, including adventure racers, producers, parents, corporate executives, college students and more.

Daring experiences and autobiography come alive
Author Burnett is behind the "Survivor" television series and is a fine TV producer, but he has his own story to tell, and Alan Shearman narrates it in Dare To Succeed. The author's daring experiences and autobiography come alive under Shearman's hand.

RSA Security's Official Guide to Cryptography
Published in Digital by McGraw-Hill ()
Authors: Steve Burnett, Stephen Payne, and Steve Paine
Average review score:

A very good combination.
A good book that combines the expressions of a Mathematician: Burnett and an Engineer: Paine.
The book is descriptively very good with images that today in day is necessary to understand the theoretical ideas better.
The chapters two, three four contain the most didactic description and with an efficient theoretical profile.
RSASecurity made well in publishing this book as official guide as much as makes CISCO with their books.
It is necessary to stand out that they exist other books of RSA that explain particular details about PKI and IPSec, however the book of Burnett and Paine it is distinguished by the clarity of the exposed topics.
I agree with the chapters eight, nine and ten, although they should expose a little but about the kindness of the protocol SET.
It is a very good book that I recommend for those who want to know about the applied cryptography.
A final recommendation: it is certain that today in day the topic of the telecommunications has come being developed with more peak in the world, and although it is certain, the great majority of the books it defines aspects linked to the nets of computers, it is not necessary to leave aside the nets of cellular telephony and the security of the telecommunications, you that it exists now for example RSA Mobile.
For the side of the content of the CD, it is excellent because it offers us information in files pdf of aspects itemized in cryptography.
Lastly, the algorithm I find RSAOAEP that it should be more extended, with more examples and bigger covering, however its inclusion in the book is the appropriate one.
Very good support of RSASecurity to the world.

Excellent referent written by two experts in the field
While this book gets 4 stars, you may want to go for the freeware version.

The reason is that while 'The RSA Security Guide to Cryptography' is an excellent referent written by two experts in the field, nearly all of the information in the book and accompanying CD-ROM is available free.

...But for those that don't like the question and answer format of the FAQ, the book may be a better option for them

The accompanying CD-ROM includes the proceedings from the 2000 RSA Conference, all PKCS standards, the RSA bulletins and RSA Crypto Bytes. Also, all this information is free via the RSA website.

... the book while a good read is not cheap. If you don't mind downloading the RSA FAQ and printing it out, you can save a lot of money.

But if you want something with a binding on it, the 'The RSA Security Guide to Cryptography' is a valuable reference.

Burnett/Paine hit the "nail on the head" with this book
This is a MUST HAVE book, I have not been able to put it down! the other engineers that I work with are so impressed by the attention to detail and clarity that they are also ordering this as I write. For anyone implementing high level security this is the best all around book I have picked up. The info in the appendix sections would be worth buying alone! It gives Technical leaning/learning folks a great primer (and I learned a lot from it too). If you are looking to clarify security models/risks buy this book!

Dangerous Waters

Fact or fiction? Where's the beef?
You do have to separate bull from actual facts tho. He tends to embellish. And he is flippant. And a bit full of himself. He talks about one incident involving a Canadian being attacked by a pirate in Mexico but fails to mention the well known fact that the whole thing was a hoax. When the author runs that loose and fast with the truth it makes you wonder how much of this is bull and how much is fact. Also this author, who is a good writer, very good in fact, can't make up his mind if this is an investigative "facts based" piece or a compelling piece of fiction. He darts back and forth between the two styles further blurring the line between fact and fiction. He also fattens up the piece by repeating himself. I take books like this with a grain of salt and jaundice eye, cull what seems to be credible facts from the minefield of bull. And he never pauses for a second to ask why are these "pirates" so desparate in the first place? What is behind the economic conditions that drive barefoot natives to risk life and limb to board a 8 foot high oil barge anyway? He talks about them taking synthetic rope so their wives can make fishing nets? Why would they need that if they can get 40K from a ship safe? I mean there is a whole load of unexplainable stuff here. He has a very interesting topic here but doesn't seem to have enough information to truly flesh it out. He would have done better writing a novella peppered with facts rather than a non-fiction piece speckled with fiction. He is taking what would have been at best a good feature magazine article and fattened it up into a book.

In Too Deep
This book starts out like a house on fire, interesting and for me something new. Unfortunately the author could not keep up the pace of excitement and the middle of the book drags a bit. The author takes the reader through the world of modern day pirates or at least the ones in Asia that attack large oil tankers. The author does tell us this type of activity takes place all over the world and to all different types of ships but the book only focuses on oil tankers in Asia. He does a good job of telling us the overall issues like who is doing it, why and where, but I think he fell down on the excitement of the actual events.

The author just did not hold my attention with the different dangers and types of highjacking. I think he really could have made the book more exciting by focusing more on many different events instead of a 10 day trip on an oil tanker talking about on deck rail patrols and the food in the mess. I do not want to sound too negative; the book was overall entertaining and interesting. I would suggest it if you are interested in the subject. It just could have been more fun and exciting.

A well-written look at piracy and how it threatens shipping
This book is extremely well-writen and contains both first and second hand accounts of piracy. More important than the individual tales that Burnett weaves together is the overall theme. Virtually no ship is completely safe from piracy and piracy has been increasing at alarming rates.

I heard this author on the radio, and was so capitivated by the subject matter that I later bought this book. I was not disappointed. Burnet opens with his tale of pirates boarding his sale boat. He later travels on two large commerical ships. While traveling on these boats, he blends firsthand accounts of piracy prevention and secondhand accounts of attacks on commericial ships.

That these pirates have success while using very primitive tools and methods is very alarming.

As for shotcomings, I would have preferred more information on piracy in the caribbean. The book focuses on the biggest hotspot, the Malacca Straights near Singapore.

For those who doubt the authenticity of the subject matter, I suggest you type "piracy report" into google and check out the weekly reports provided by the International Chamber of Commerce. The link was provided by the author.

Formula One Through the Lens: Four Decades of Motorsport Photography

Formula One Through the Lens
This was a Christmas gift and I found this book to be a good book on the history of Formula 1. Some of the other reviewers made comments about the amount of black and white photos in this book but you have to remember that those were state-of-art. Although color photography has been around for a while, it wasn't until the mid 1960s that the average joe could afford 35 mm color cameras. This book is a good reference book and a welcome addition to my autoracing memorabilia collection.

Superb but in small quantity back/white F-1 photographs.
A great piece for F-1 book collector.Almost all of the N.Snowdon and D.Burnett photos are superb, especially from the 60's and 70's. The text for each photo is very accurate. Some photos are very rare and even sensational. This is a book that really could be the double or even the triple of the 160 pages with +/- 250 photos. The some confuse layout of contents and the lack of some years of the 4 decades are the weak points of this fascinating book.

Lots of black and white photos
A nicely presented book from the publishers of the excellent yearly Autocourse annual. Lots of pictures to look at covering 4 decades of motorsport photography from Nigel Snowdon and Diana Burnett. However all the pictures in the book are black and white, which is a bit of a shame. There is a bonus in that there are comments from the photographers regarding particular pictures (where, why, when and how etc..) redeem this somewhat. A nice addition to the motorsport and formula 1 collection.

Trail Running: From Novice to Master (The Mountaineers Outdoor Expert Series)
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (April, 2002)
Authors: Kirsten Poulin, Christina Flaxel, Kirstin Poulin, Stan Swartz, and Mark Burnett
Average review score:

Not Much Trail-Running-Specific Stuff in Here ...
Gotta say, I was quite disappointed with this book. I am a novice runner who is thinking about getting into trail running -- and I'm also an experienced hiker, climber, etc. I was expecting this book to talk to me about the details of trail running, but instead, it dwells over-long on just being in the backcountry -- just like any other hiking book, but not as well as the best of that genre. So ... I returned it.

everything i wanted to know about trail running
I love jumping into new sports but always manage to wind up with a million tedious questions. As a relatively new trail runner, this book answers what I want to know about training for ultras. Now I feel confident that I can bypass the ... personal trainer route AND talk about more interesting things than mileage with my fellow trail running friends. What a relief, all around I'm sure. Too bad it wasn't out 6 months ago when I needed to pick out shoes and started training for my first marathon!

What a treat!
I really, really enjoyed this book. I've always loved running, but for years I always kept to the roads. I always wondered what kind of running experience I would have "in the woods" but never dared to venture off the paved surfaces. This book gave me the confidence to do just that, and I'm amazed at what I've been missing all these years. Animals, scenery, rivers, mountains, sunrises and sunsets... what a treat. Thank you for writing this book. My senses (and also my knees) thank you!

The Little Bitty Snake = Chisana Chisana Hebi (English/Japanese Edition)
Published in Paperback by Open Hand Pub (01 October, 1992)
Authors: Jorma Rodieck and Yumiko M. Burnett
Average review score:

A simple children story...
I bought the Japanese-English version of this book. The idea was to practice Japanese reading with an easy text. Unfortunately, this is the typical book for the very young so that texts are scarce (and extremely simple) while bold images cover the best part of each page. Fine as a book for small children but not a good choice to practice foreign language reading.

Expose kids to other languages
I bought a set of these three bilingual (English and Spanish/French/Japanese) books for my niece, aged three and a half. She's not quite reading yet, but I wanted to expose her to the idea of different languages early. She likes the bold and simple illustrations and the story when it is read to her in English.

The Italian Guillotine
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing (May, 1998)
Authors: Stanton H. Burnett and Luca Mantovani
Average review score:

one star...The book is well writen.
Luca Mantovani is a public-relations-man of the Italian Party "Forza Italia", allied with the ex-fascist "Alleanza Nazionale". The Forza Italia's leader Silvio Berlusconi was very very close to the Socialist Party ex-leader Bettino Craxi, who was one of the most corrupted politician in Italy. It seems that Craxi gave many many favours to Berlusconi, who seems to have something to hide about these favours and his own past. It's true, it's possible that there was somebody behind the judges in the Operation "Clear Hands", maybe the ex-Communist Party "PDS". But the point is that I don't accept any judgement from Mantovani, extremely involved in this dramatic and confused situation, in which his own party is more interested to fight what they call "the judge party" and to save their leader, than to think about the real needs of Italian People.

Accurate and true description of otherwise concealed facts
This is a description of a major event in Italy, the causes of which were concealed and distorted in Italian medias at the time of the trials and afterwards. It is a new approach to one of the "Italian misteries"
